So you arrive in London and decide its time to head out to one of the city’s many markets. Whether it’s Camden, Borough, Portobello Road or any other, there are some things you should know before venturing amongst the stalls:
1. Check the opening times. Some markets are open everyday of the week, but some are open just on the weekends. Some days they close earlier, or start later, so just make sure to check ahead of time to ensure that the stalls will actually be open when you get there.

2. Bring cash. It is likely that a vendor will not take card, and although some do, it will save you (and them) time and hassle. There are sometime ATMs located around the markets, but the lines are long, so save some time and get money beforehand.

3. Come prepared for the weather. London is known for its cold and its rain, so make sure to wear lots of layers and pack an umbrella if shopping during the colder seasons. There is some cover in the markets, but for the most part they are outside, so dress appropriately.

4. It will be crowded. If you visit on a weekend it is very likely that it will be hard to move about the market as they become packed with locals and tourists alike. Just be patient, as everyone is trying to get around, and make sure to practice your “sorry” to fit in with the Brits.

5. Keep your wits about you. Although London is not as bad as some places in Europe, make sure to keep your purse and pockets well guarded, as pick pocketing can take place anywhere. The crowded nature of the markets make it much more susceptible.

6. Come hungry! Many of the markets have a wide variety of food options of all ethnic varieties. Don’t miss out on trying something new, but give yourself time to browse all your options, as there are often more than you think.

7. Don’t rush. There’s a lot to see at each market, but give yourself plenty of time to take it all in. You never know what hidden treasure you may find when you look a little closer.

8. Bring a camera. There are many beautiful sights to be seen at the markets, and unique ones as well! London is a multifaceted city and there is no place better to capture its vibrancy than at a market. From prints to produce to people, there is always a photo opportunity to be had.

9. Ask questions. Talk to the stall operators! You never know what you may learn about a food or product by asking them a couple questions. You will also appreciate your purchase more when you get to know the person who made it or where it has come from. The stories are what the markets are all about.

10. Use all your senses. Like I mentioned above there are many amazing things to see at the markets, but don’t stop with just sight. Listen, smell, taste and touch; it is a sensory treat to walk among the stalls, so take it all in!

And now you're ready to go explore all the amazing markets. Enjoy!
